Vocabulary

  1. Shillings-A former unit of money. Used in Australia, Fiji, Ghana, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, and Nigeria. Equal to a pound. Used in the 18 and 19 hundreds.
  2. Welts-A ridge or wale on the surface of the the skin. The result from a blow of a stick or whip.
  3. Bawl-Cry or wail heavily
  4. Immortal-Not liable to death. Can't perish and is constant.
  5. Sneer- A look of scorn or contempt.
  6. Abomination- An object of intense loathing or dislike
  7. Diversion-An entertaining distraction
  8. Lorry-A large motor car.
  9. Dole-Distributing, common in charity
  10. Docket-A list of cases in court for trail
  11. Ravenous- Extremely hungry
  12. Squander-To spread
  13. Affliction-A cause of mental or physical pain
  14. Knackered-Very tired
  15. Bog- Wet soil composed of vegetable compost

  2. Using a "text-to-text connection," your descriptive description of "immortal" reminds me of the epic hero, Gilgamesh!

    In addition, I found it interesting to learn that "shillings" were a form of money in the 18-1900's. Its truly fascinating to me the way in which each individual country has its own form of "civilization," in a way, as each individual culture, has its very own customs. (Relating to the "culture" theme.)

  3. I am glad you've posted these words seeing as it has helped with me get a better understanding of the novel while reading. The only thing is I agree with Jenna, it would have been nice if you included the pages that you discovered these words on in case we were to ever go back and reread certain sections in the novel.
